New Delhi, Jan 23 (UNI) Delhi International Airport Private Limited (DIAL) has received environmental clearance from the ministry of environment and forests for expansion, restructuring and modernisation of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here.

The clearance was issued to DIAL based on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) study. The EIA study involved measurement of existing ambient conditions with respect to ambient air quality, water quality, soil characteristics and noise levels.

Based on the environmental model study carried out, the impact of airport development activities on existing ambient conditions are well within the statutory permissible limits.

The EIA study was carried out by a recognised reputed national laboratory which was commissioned immediately after DIAL signed the operation, maintenance and development agreement (OMDA) for modernisation of Delhi airport with the government in April last year.

DIAL is currently in the process of implementing the master plan for expansion of IGI Airport. The master plan envisages the design and construction of a new terminal and a runway for the modernisation and upgradation of the airport.

Phase one of the master plan will see the construction of a new passenger terminal building (Terminal 3) which will cater to both domestic and international passengers.

Prior to that, a new domestic terminal and new CAT IIIB runway will be ready by 2008. DIAL recently awarded the contract for design and construction of terminal, runway and associated works of Delhi airport. The deal valued at about Rs 5,400 crore will give shape to the master plan unveiled by GMR-DIAL.

DIAL is a joint venture company consisting of GMR Group, Airports Authority of India, Fraport, Eraman Malaysia and India Development Fund.
