Fire in paper godown, 40 nearby huts destroyed

Surat, Jan 23 (UNI) A paper godown at Raghukul market on Ring Road here caught fire today, engulfing around 40 nearby huts, fire brigade sources said.

Ten fire fighters and 10 tankers were pressed into service to extinguish the blaze.

''Most of the huts were owned by workers who were working as package makers of sarees. Their huts were filled with paper packages and that caused the fire to spread fast,'' a fire brigade official said.

No human casualty was reported, however, a fire brigade staff, Rohidas Patil was admitted to Corporation-owned SMIMER Hospital due to burn injuries.

Surat Mayor Kanu Mawani, Deputy Mayor Sushma Agarwal and corporators rushed scene the place and led the rescue operations.

Corporation officials have provided temporary shelter and other amenities to the affected.
