New Delhi, Jan 23 (UNI) The Congress would secure a clear majority so as to form a Government on its own if the elections to the Lok Sabha were held in the second week of this month, says a survey.

The Congress would then have shed its dependence on coalition partners and secured a clear majority with around 300 seats, according the State of the Nation survey conducted by the CNN-IBN-CSD-Hindustan Times.

According to the survey, conducted in 21 States across the country with a 15,000 representative sample, the Indian electorate continues to have confidence in the ruling UPA coalition. The UPA is placed better than its was in 2004.

The Opposition space, it appears is widening with the NDA expected to get 115 seats, the survey predicts.

The poll, though conducted this month, also suggests that the Congress was ahead in the race in the two major north Indian states of Punjab and Uttarakhand, where state Assemblies are going to the polls.

However, it must be stressed that the poll was conducted on a national level and was not specific to the States.
