Chennai, Jan 23: A scientist, Shamsuddin, today claimed that the cause of earthquakes was due to chemical reactions that occur under the ground, releasing huge amount of gaseous products.

These gases get collected in sites called gas pockets in subterranean chambers. As the gases keep accumulating the pressure builds up and it keeps growing till it reaches a critical limit.

Once the critical limit is crossed, the gas packets eject out through a weak point in an explosive manner, causing shakes and tremors, which is called earthquake, according to the new theory.

Based on Mr Shamsuddin's theory, earthquakes could be stopped by setting up Earthquake Negation Units after identifying the vulnerable areas.

The theory was explained at a press conference here today by SRM University Director, Research, Virtual Education and International initiatives Dr Ponnavaikko, who headed the research team comprising Ojas Mahapatra and R Shivaraman, two B.Tech students of SRM University at suburban Kattankulathur.

In 2002, Dr Ponnavaikko formulated the project proposal based on Shamusuddin's theory and forwarded it to the Department of Science and Technology (DST) for action.

However, a committee set up by the DST went with the existing Plate tectonics theory and ignored the proposal, following which the DST referred it to Anna University for study on the advise of President A P J Abdul Kalam the same year.

The proposed theory could be promoted only if it was recommended by a recognised University.

As there was no response from Anna University till date, Dr Ponnavaikko engaged his two students to go into the theoretical facts of Shamsuddin's postulation.
