Chennai, Jan 23 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Assembly today passed a Bill providing for the re-election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Chennai Corporation.

The Chennai City Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill-2007, introduced by Local Administration Minister M K Stalin in the House yesterday, was passed by voice vote without any debate.

Mr Stalin, who was recuperating after a treatment for back pain, was not present in the House when the Bill was passed.

According to the statement of objects and reasons, except Chennai Corporation, Mayors and Deputy Mayors of other Corporations were eligible for re-election.

The government wanted to have uniform provisions with regard to eligibility of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for re-election. Therefore it was decided to amend the Act suitably, it said.

The Bill would also seek to restore an earlier provision making it mandatory to conduct Council meeting at least once a month to enable it to address the problems and grievances of the public.
