Vice president calls for simplifying legal system

Jodhpur, Jan 22 (UNI) Vice president Bhiron Singh Shekhawat, while expressing concern over the delay in the justice delivery system, called for simplifying the legal proceedings based on the recommedations of the law commissions.

The Vice President was speaking at the first convocation function of the National Law University here today.

''About 35.60 lakh cases of civil and criminal cases were pending in the high courts in the country since March 2006 while the number of cases pending in the subordinate courts were estimated to be over 3 crore,'' he said.

He said, for the speedy disposal of cases, the government had to appoint at least 130 judges in the high courts and 2850 judges in the lower courts.

He said the legal system need to be equipped with basic infrastracture and modernisation along with simplifcation of the procedure to cope up with the magnitude of cases.

He also called for the alternative legal remidies like Lok adalats and fast track courts to deliver justice to the people without delay.
