Use Indian system of medicines to fight HIV/AIDS: Govt

New Delhi, Jan 22 (UNI) Asserting that traditional medicine systems like Unani could play a vital role in containing the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country, the Health Ministry has called for optimally utilising these resources.

Inaugurating the National Consultation on Unani Medicine in HIV/AIDS organised by the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine here today, Mr Shiv Basant, Joint Secretary, heading the AYUSH department, said Unani and other Indian systems of Medicine should be used to fight AIDS.

He said the potential of about five lakh registered medical practitioners of Unani and other Indian systems of medicine in the country should be properly used in spreading the message about the gravity of the problem and ways for prevention of HIV/AIDS and other health challenges.

Since HIV/AIDS could derail the country's progress, an all out effort should be made to grapple with the issue. Awareness about the problem was most important and everyone including the proponents of various Indian systems of medicine should activety participate in fighting the meance, he said.
