New Delhi, Jan 22 (UNI) The government will take a view on the DMK demand for rewriting the Constitution after discussions at the UPA Coordination Committee and the highest level at the Congress.

''An appropriate view will be taken by the UPA allies after discussing the demand at the UPA coordination committee meeting,'' Congress spokesperson Jayanti Natarajan told reporters.

Ms Natarajan said she was sure that the issue would also figure ''at the highest level'' at the party. She made the remark in reply to a question whether the Congress Working Committee headed by party President Sonia Gandhi would consider the demand.

The DMK had sought the rewriting of the Constitution to ensure social justice in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict throwing open the Ninth Schedule to judicial scrutiny.

Several politically sensitive social welfare schemes have been placed under the Ninth Schedule by successive governments. There have been demands for placing the issue of reservation in higher educational institutions in the Ninth Schedule to avoid interference from the judiciary.

Ms Natarajan said she would hesitate to equate the DMK demand with a similar move by the BJP.
