Tension in North Karnataka town after group altercation

Jewargi, Karnataka, Jan 22 (UNI) The police resorted to cane charge to disperse two groups of people indulging in altercation over removal of a religious place in this town Gulbarga district today.

The Police said the incident occurred during two religious organisations gave a bandh call, demanding removal of a religious place located near Narayanapur Dam and some meat stalls near a statue.

While asking owners of shops and business establishments to close down, the activists took an altercation with some traders. Realising that the situation was going out of control, police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the two groups. The situation was now peaceful and under control, Gulbarga Rural DSP S S Nayak told UNI.

Meanwhile, communal harmony forum convened a peace meeting in the town. No arrest had been made so far, the official added.
