Police resort to mild lathicharge to disperse VHP activists

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 22 (UNI) The police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse agitating VHP activists and arrested four people in this connection at Vazhimukku, near Balaramapuram in the district tonight.

The incident occurred when some unidentified persons pelted stones against the VHP activists who were taking out a procession after lodging a complaint to the Balaramapuram Police Station against the removal of their flags by unknown persons, police said.

Following the stone pelting, infuriated VHP activists damaged three KSRTC buses which necessitated the police to resort to lathicharge.

DIG Raman Srivastava, who visited the spot, told newspersons that the situation was now under control.

''We are taking all precautions and sufficient police force has been posted in sensitive areas,'' he said, while appealing to the people to not believe in rumours.
