MDMK Chief appears before court in defamation case

Chennai, Jan 22 (UNI) Marumalarchi DMK General Secretary Vaiko today appeared before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court here today in connection with the defamation case filed against him by DMK Treasurer and State Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy for allegedly making false remarks against DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

Mr Vaiko pleaded innocence when CMM Bhoominathan said there was a case against him for making false allegations against Mr Karunanidhi.

Meanwhile, Mr Veerasamy's counsel sought time for his client to appear before the court as he had attend the ongoing session of the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

After hearing him, the judge adjourned the case to February 27 next.

Later, Mr Vaiko told waiting journalists that some people were attempting to destroy the MDMK through party leaders Gingee Ramachandran and Mr L Ganesan but failed.

He wanted repoll in all 155 wards of the Chennai Corporation in view of Madras High Court's split verdict on in a case relating to violent incidents during the recent polls.

The MDMK leader wanted State Director General of Police D Mukherjee, City Police Commissioner Letika Saran and State Election Commuissioner D Chandrasekaran to be suspended for the violent incidents which occurred during the local body elections.

He said the AIADMK and MDMK walked out of the Assembly to press for the ouster of the officials and both the parties would not take part in the ensuing byelections to the local bodies on February eight.

Mr Vaiko had accused the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister of instigating MDMK Former Deputy General Secretary Gingee Ramachandran, MP and Former Presidium Chairman L Ganesan, MP to convene a rebel General Council of the MDMK. But their efforts proved futile.

Mr Vaiko alleged Mr Karunanidhi had instigated them with an ulterior motive of damaging the fame of the MDMK and to destroy the party.
