New Delhi, Jan 22 (UNI) Deprivation of millions of cricket lovers from the India-Windies one-day international yesterday has prompted the Centre to bring in a legislation to make it mandatory for private broadcasters to share feed with Doordarshan for major sporting events in the country.

''Millions of people who depend on Doordarshan will not have to miss major sports events as the Centre is soon going to bring in a legislation to force private broadcasters to give their feed to the public broadcaster,'' Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Parlaimentary Affairs Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told UNI over phone from Kolkata.

Asked about the Nimubus Corporation's decision to approach the court, Mr Dasmunsi said, '' Yes, the Corporation has challenged the government's decision. We will see...'' In the absence of the DD not telecasting the event following the refusal of Nimbus, the only broadcaster which had the telecasting right, the ODI was lost to majority of viewers as the channel was not available in many parts of the country, including large areas of the capital.

According to a Prasar Bharati, Nimbus had suggested a 15-minute delayed telecast on DD's terrestrial channel, which was rejected by the national broadcaster.

Prasar Bharati's proposal to air live commentary was also rejected by Nimbus.
