India signs two agreements with IEA

New Delhi, Jan 22 (UNI) With a view to strenthen mutual cooperation in energy sector, India today signed two agreements with International Energy Agency (IEA).

These are the IEA Greenhouse Gases (GHG) and R&D Technology Agreement and the IEA Demand Side Management (DSM) Implementing Agreement.

The agreements were signed today by NTPC Chairman and Managing Director T Shankaralingam and Bureau of Energy Efficiency Director General Ajay Mathur respectively with IEA in the presence of Power Secretary R V Shahi, IEA Executive Director Claude Mandil and other dignitaries from the Power Ministry and CEA.

To participate in the GHG programme, NTPC has been nominated nodal agency for representing the country's interest in the programme, while BEE for the IEA-DSM programme.

This cooperation will facilitate research in the areas of mutual interest with a view to achieve economic and technical efficiency improvements through introduction of more environmentally friendly and sound technologies.

The Ministry of Power had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IEA in 1998 for cooperation in the power sector.
