CITU's nationwide strike during Budget Session

Bangalore, Jan 22: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) General Secretary W R Varadarajan today said that a one-day nation wide strike will be held during the Budget Session demanding immediate introduction and passing of the long awaited Unorganised Sectors Bill.

Talking to newsmen here, he said that the issues, including price rice, strengthening of Public Distribution System, effective implementation of Employment Guarantee Act and extending it to throughout the country including the urban households and enactment of separate legislation for agriculture workers and unorganised workers would be raised during the strike.

He said that besides Joint Action of CITU, All India Kissan Sabha and Agricultural Workers Union would participate in the strike.

Mr Varadarajan said that CITU would keep a close watch on the Union Government's move on the 16 point demand put forth on December 14 strike and chalk out sustainable agitation program in consultation with various trade unions and National Federations..

He said that the government agenda appears to be dictated by the international financial and trade institutions.

Mr Varadarajan said that CITU would approach other constituents of the Committee of Public Sector Trade Unions for organising a country-wide programs including a strike by PSU workers against the regressive guidelines issued by the Department of Public Enterprises on wage position for the Central PSU workers.
