Bill enabling Mayor and Deputy to seek re-election introduced

Chennai, Jan 22 (UNI) A Bill enabling Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Chennai Corporation to seek re-election was introduced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly today.

Introducing the Chennai City Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill-2007 in the House, Local Administration Minister M K Stalin said except Chennai Corporation, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of other Corporations were eligible for re-election.

The Government wanted to have uniform provisions with regard to eligibility of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for re-election. Therefore it decided to amend the Act suitably, he said.

The Bill would also seek to restore an earlier provision making it mandatory to conduct of the Council meeting at least once a month to enable it to address the problems and grievances of the public, he added.
