1,000 tortoises recovered, 3 held

Jaunpur, Jan 22 (UNI) Almost 1,000 tortoises were recovered in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh this evening, while they were being smuggled out of the state.

Superintendent of Police M D Karndhar said acting on a tip-off, a raid was conducted in Changpu village under Sujanganj police station area and three miscreants were nabbed.

Later, 45 gunny bags, containing almost 1,000 tortoises were seized.

On interrogation, the accused confesed that they used to take the consignment to West Bengal.

Mr Karndhar added the tortoises would be released in the Gomti river tommorow.
