Tripura observes 36 years of statehood

Agartala, Jan 21 (UNI) Tripura is observing its 36th year of statehood through various programmes today.

The main function would be inaugurated by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and presided by the state Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism Minister Anil Sarkar.

In all 184 kings have ruled this princely state. The last king Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya, who died in 1947, had wished to join the Indian Union, which was fulfiled by his wife by signing an agreement with the Indian government.

Tripura was included in the Indian union on October 15, 1949.

Later Maharaja's son Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya, who died in November 2006, took over the throne.

In 1956 the state was declared a Union Territory and attained its statehood on January 21, 1972 as per the constitution of North Eastern Areas (Reconstruction) Law of 1971.

The current per capita income of the people is Rs 7,500 as against Rs 1307 in 1980-81.
