Tripura beefs up security for Republic day

Agartala, Jan 21 (UNI) Security has been tightened in the hilly state of Tripura in view of the Republic day and the ongoing ULFA activities in neighbouring Asom.

According to police officials, security measures had been beefed up and anti-insurgency operations have been launched in remote areas to flush out underground outfits like NLFT and ATTF operating in the state.

Dog squads also have been pressed into service in the busy commercial areas, they said.

''We are not taking any chance,'' the officials said adding that ULFA and NSCN of Nagaland are providng all possible helps including arms training to the North East militants.

The officials have described ULFA as 'leader' of the North East militants.

However, the officials said the authorities have not received any information regarding boycott call on the Republic day so far but have maintained a close vigil to check any kind of violence.

Assam rifles, TSR, State Police and other para military forces have also launched combing operation in the remote areas and BSF is already on alert along the Indo-Bangladesh border with Tripura, sources said.
