Toll in ULFA attacks reach three, curfew in Kakopathar

Guwahati, Jan 21 (UNI) With the killing of a local Congress leader in Tinsukia district, the death toll in separate ULFA attacks in Asom since last evening has gone up to three.

Night Curfew was also clamped in Kakopathar area of the same district after a top ULFA leader, 'corporal' Palashmoni Barua alias Bibhisan Chetia, was killed in an Army encounter.

Local people took out a procession with the body and gathered in large numbers at the time of last rites. The slain militant was a resident of a village in the locality and was a top cadre of the 28th battalion of the outfit.

Another ULFA militant was shot dead by the police in Guwahati city earlier in the day. A few grenades, some letters and notes about the possible sites of bomb blasts during the National Games were recovered from him.

President of Congress unit of Betoni village Bogadhar Moran was shot dead by ULFA assailants in the village, under Digboi police station in Tinsukia district.

The banned outfit had issued threat to the Congress party, stating it would target party leaders up to the highest level.

Meanwhile, 2,000 additional paramilitary troops were dispatched to the state yesterday for the National Games next month.

These 20 companies of paramilitary forces are in addition to the 30 companies already sent after the ULFA triggered attacks on Hindi-speaking population of the state.

The state government has also appointed an Inspector General of Police to oversee security arrangements for the Games. The IGP would be in charge of the Games security, official sources said.
