People's faith in judiciary is immense: Governor
Jammu, Jan 21 (UNI) Emphasising supremacy of the Constitution, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha said the judiciary had a great role in interpreting it and guiding other two pillars of democracy.
In his presidential address at Shri H L Gupta Memorial Lecture at Model Institute of Education and Research here last evening, the Governor said the people have immense faith and confidence in judiciary which had to be reinforced by maintaining its credibility at all costs.
Referring to judicial activism, he said this had perhaps become inevitable with changing times. ''At the time of Independence, the three wings of democracy--legislature, executive and judiciary were seen with same reverence and esteem but with the changing times, old values seem to have deteriorated and the people are looking towards courts for redressal of grievances.'' he added.
Citing an example, he said the judiciary ensured that pollution level in Delhi was brought down. Had executive done it, judiciary would not intervene, he added.
General Sinha said the judiciary, legislature and executive were supreme in their respective spheres but all the three had to work under the umbrella of the Constitution.
