Ajmer, Jan 21 (UNI) Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and AICC general secretary incharge of Uttar Pradesh Ashok Gehlot said the people of Uttar Pradesh are looking up to the Congress after 16 years of tryst with non-Congress governments in the state.

The Congress leader who was here for the release of the commemorative stamp of veteran Congressman Durga Prasad Chaudhary on the occasion of his birth centenary said, ''The people of Uttar Pradesh have tried all non-Congress parties like the BJP, BSP and SP in the last 16 years. But all of them have let them down.'' He said the people are now looking at the Congress to provide an alternative. He claimed the people have made up their mind to bring back the Congress in the state and Congress would regain its lost glory.

He said the Congress is also partly responsible for its downfall in the state as it made some mistakes in the past by tying up with some parties or extended support to some ''unpopular governments''.

He said this has dented the image of the party in the state.
