Kidney racketeer arrested
Chennai, Jan 21 (UNI) The CB-CID police today achieved a major breakthrough in the sensational kidney racket case with the arrest of a person, two days after it took over the case.
The arrested person, Raju, was said to be an agent of the illegal organ trade.
In the wake of mounting complaints about the kidney racket from innocent victims in north Chennai, the city police had sounded a state-wide alert and stepped up efforts to nab those involved in the racket.
The CB-CID teams had also brought about ten hospitals, where the alleged transplants were done, under its scanner.
Police sources said the arrest of Raju, hailing from Tondiarpet in north Chennai, from where a majority of the complaints had come, would help the probe team in making further progress.
Meanwhile, acting on a tip-off on the movements of those involved in the racket, special teams had been fanned to Madurai, Tiruchi and other parts of Tamil Nadu.
It may be recalled that poor women, who were in abject poverty, were lured by racketeers to sell their kidneys for measely prices to eke out a living.
