Five arrested for betting on cricket, two absconding

Nagpur, Jan 21 (UNI) The police today arrested five people from two different places in the city who were betting on the one-day International (ODI) matches that were played between India and the West Indies in Nagpur, and New Zealand and Australia in Sydney.

The police are looking out for two others who managed to flee during the two raids.

Acting on a tip-off, four persons, identified as Shivkumar Gulabchandra Agrawal (38), Manoj Gulabchandra Agrawal (36), Abdul Firoze Abdul Aziz Sheikh (33) and Chandra Laxman Warade (29), were nabbed from an apartment in the Seminary Hills area, the police said.

Later in the day, three people, identified as Bhupesh alias Kake Sardar, Ashok Jaggi, and Pappu alias Mohsin Rehman Nawab Rehman (33), were found placing bets in an apartment in Yadav Nagar area, the police said. While Rehman was arrested, Sardar and Jaggi managed to flee, the police added.

The police have seized Rs 5,500 in cash, three colour television sets, 20 mobile telephones, several tape recorders, two motorcycles and some 'communication equipment' in the raids at the two places.

All the seven suspects have been booked under sections 4 and 5 of the Bombay Gambling Prevention Act.
