Rs 5 cr to be spent on 960 school buildings in north Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 20 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir government is constructing 960 schools in the north Kashmir district of Baramulla under ''Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan,'' an official spokesman said.

He said over Rs 5 crore are being spent on the construction of 251 three-room, 525 one-room, 50 five-room school buildings in the district while 114 three room, 15 five room and 5 one room school building for quake hit Uri tehsil under the scheme.

A Majority of the school buildings have been damaged during the 17 year long militancy in different parts of the district. Wheras, almost all the school buildings were razed to ground in Uri due to the October 8 quake in 2005.

So far, Rs 1.25 crore have been released for the construction of these buildings, work on which is apace. Besides, another 35 buildings are also coming up at Rs 3.75 crore, he said.

Under district sector Rs 38 lakh are being expended on various works, of which, seven works are being executed for Education department, he added.

Similarly, under Border Area Development Programme (BADP) 28 buildings, 11 drinking water schemes and latrine points are coming up at the cost of Rs 85.63 lakh while under NABARD, work is apace on 177 buildings. Of which, 9 three-room buildings and 80 one-room buildings will be given to the Education department.
