Official calls for manufacture of India centric defence products

Bangalore, Jan 20 (UNI) Expressing dissatisfaction over tardy development of indigenous defence equipment Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister M Natarajan today called for design and development of India Specific Products both in civil and defence sectors.

Speaking to newsmen here he regretted that India had engaged in producing equipment only under license and did not contribute much to develop innovative products. "The indigenous design and development of Light Combat Aircraft took a long time after the country manufactured HF 24," he pointed out.

Replying to queries with regard to the development of Cauvery engine for the LCA, he said the government had shortlisted several companies to alter the design of engine for enhancing the efficiency of the engine's power. He declined to name these companies and also whether it would be a joint venture. "I expect the pre-bid would be completed in two or three months and then we can go forward," he added.

He however listed out various achievements made by the Defence Research a Development Organisation and said much progress had been made with regard to Airborne Warning Control Systems, Multi Access Vehicle and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.
