'Kumbhakarna' to help get Limca record

Mangalore, Jan 20: In an attempt to 'sculpt' a place in the Limca Book of Records, Prashanth Patnaik, brother of renowned sand sculptor Sudarshan Patnaik, has created a 200-ft-long sand sculpture of 'Kumbhakarna' from the Ramayana epic, at the three-day Beach Utsav at Panambur beach, near here.

The mammoth 50-ft-wide and 30-ft-high sand sculpture, created using nearly 4,000 tonnes of sand, was expected to erase the present record in the name of Sudarshan for his 100-ft-long work in Puri on Christmas eve, symbolising universal brotherhood.

The sculpture of Kumbhakarna sleeping over books was symbolic of a person with the capacity to acquire knowledge, but unwilling to learn and oblivious to the reality around him, Prashanth Patnaik explained.

A few inches away from the head of the giant was a globe, with the faces of Jesus Christ, Guru Nanak, Ibrahim and Shankaracharya carved on four sides representing the much-needed communal harmony, he said.
