Bangalore, Jan 20 (UNI) Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister M Natarajan today termed the last week's successful test of the satellite-killing missile by China as a matter of concern.

Speaking to newsmen here he said it was a recent development and India was awaiting further reports on the Chinese achievements. Once it was received, appropriate steps could be initiated in that direction, he stated.

Commenting elaborately on such developments, he said recently India had also made a missile test where interception was possible.

"We launched a missile with simulation of 'enemy missile' we intercepted the missile successfully. This was the first missile interception. But the Chinese mission was launching of a +killer vehicle+," he pointed out.

He termed the missile test by India as a real breakthrough technology and it was done at an altitude of about 50 kilometers in atmosphere. But when it came to satellites it was a different orbit.

"How much you can intercept and elements of such interception technology lie with only a certain group of people. We need to talk to scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation about the real competency of such technology. It is an important development.

If this is made possible, one can possibly disable satellite, its Global Positioning System or navigation systems, especially the military aspects. It is a matter of concern and we will make our own assessment of the situation after receiving full information," he added.

Using a ground-based medium-range ballistic missile, China claimed success in hitting an old weather satellite about 865 km above the earth on January 11.
