Asom: Centre rushes 20 Cos of paramilitary forces

New Delhi, Jan 20: In view of the fresh threat from ULFA to non-Asomese people, the Centre has sent 20 more companies of paramilitary forces to the state for an all-out war against the insurgent group.

These forces were meant for both the internal security duties and security of National Games to be held in Guwahati next month.

This is in addition to 30 companies of paramilitary forces sent to the state recently in the wake of the ULFA carnage in which 70 Hindi-speaking people were killed.

The state government had earlier demanded 20 companies of para-military forces for ensuring the smooth conduct of games in view of ULFA threat to boycott the games. The centre has clarified that the games were a major national event for Asom and it would be held on schedule. It had assured the state government all possible cooperation in conducting the National Games in Guwahati for the first time.

Meanwhile, the Army along with various wings of paramilitary forces have already launched a massive drive against the militant outfit. Many militants have been neutralised and arrested and their camps busted.

ULFA had repeated its threat to all Hindi speaking people to leave the state and announced a buoycott of the Republic Day. It has also threatened All Asom Students Union who have criticised the militant attacks on innocent migrant workers.
