UAE lifts ban on import of eggs from India

Pune, Jan 19 (UNI) The UAE has lifted ban on the import of eggs from India since yesterday.

The ban was imposed in February 2006, following reports of bird flu in India.

National Egg Coordination Committee(NECC) had sent two delegations to Dubai and Abu Dhabi and had several meetings with senior ministers and bureaucrats of the UAE Government to explain the bird flu-free status of India.

The delegation included Ms Rani, MP from Rasipuram, Tamil Nadu, a NECC press note stated.

Dubai is the largest importer of eggs from India. Prior to the ban, around 75 lakh eggs were being exported daily to Dubai mostly from Tamil Nadu. Saudi Arabia had lifted the ban a week ago.

The entire West Asia and gulf region are now open for export of eggs from India. Other Gulf countries like Kuwait and Bahrain had not imposed the ban.

The poultry industry is looking up as it was apprehending a crash in egg prices with the onset of summer and prices are expected to stabilise, said the release.
