Rymbai should prove his majority in Assembly: Marak

Shillong, Jan 19 (UNI) Former Meghalaya Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Salseng C Marak today said incumbent Chief Minister J D Rymbai should prove his majority in the House if he fails to be elected as the new CLP leader.

''Mr Rymbai can prove his majority in the House, as he is leading a coalition government in the state,'' Mr Marak told UNI here.

The Congress, which has 29 MLAs in the 60-member House, heads the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government with the support of United Democratic Party (8) Meghalaya Democratic Party (4) and two MLAs each from Hills State People's Democratic Party and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement.

''It is an internal matter of the Congress, but since, we are having a coalition government we should also take our regional allies into confidence,'' the former Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee chief observed.

The senior Congress leader also felt that the AICC should allow Mr Rymbai to complete his full term as the Chief Minister in view of next year's assembly elections in the state.

''Our regional allies also wanted Mr Rymbai to complete his term and the AICC should respect the peoples sentiments,'' he stated.

Yesterday, Mr Marak's arch rival and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma also expressed similar views and assured the Chief Minister of opposition's support to prove his majority in the floor of the House.

Mr Sangma said his eight MLAs along with two MLAs each from BJP and Independents had assured him to support Mr Rymbai if the need to prove majority on the floor of the House arises.
