Punjab DGP calls for checking liquor flow during polls

Chandigarh, Jan 19 (UNI) Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) S S Virk today asked his officers to step up action against anti social persons indulging in supply of liquor and drugs etc during the assembly election campaign in the state.

He also asked them to take action against the ''musclemen'' who vitiate the atmosphere during the polls and to perform their duties in an impartial, objective and transparent manner, as desired by the Election Commission (EC).

The DGP issued these directions during a meeting of all Zonal IGs, Range DIGs, and District SSPs called to review the preparations regarding the coming elections to the state legislative assembly. Principal Secretary Home, Dr B C Gupta, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sundram Krishna and Secretary Coordination Satish Chandra were present in the meeting.

Mr Virk asked the police officer to work out their manpower requirements as well as prepare exhaustive plans for ensuring peaceful elections. He asked them to pay special attention to duties at polling stations and to the candidate's security arrangements at the time of VIP visits, public rallies as well as at the time of processions etc.

He asked them to sensitize the officers, NGOs and men to perform their duties in an alert and effective manner. Other jobs like laying of 'nakas' and patrolling must be given due importance, he added.

Mr Virk also asked the officers to implement orders of the Election Commission by taking effective action against proclaimed offenders as well as against those against whom arrest warrants had been issued by courts. He also asked the field officers to nominate nodal officers in every district to attend to election related duties.
