One ward goes unopposed to Congress in Akola

Nagpur, Jan 19 (UNI) Congress nominee from Ward Number 55 of the Akola Municipal Corporation is set to be declared elected unopposed after all other candidates withdrew from the fray on the last day of withdrawal of nominations today for the February 1 civic elections.

Official sources said Kokila Gajanan Daberao was the only candidate left from Ward Number 55 (Harihar Peth) after other three aspirants opted out of the race. Lata Kumre of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rekha Gedam of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and independent Sangita Atram withdrew from the race.

Elections will now be held in 70 out of the 71 wards in Akola city, where 500 candidates were left in the fray after the withdrawals. A total of 77 candidates had withdrawn from the contest, the sources said.

Meanwhile, in Amravati, 727 candidates were left in the fray in the 81 wards after the withdrawal of nominations. Official sources said that 91 candidates had opted out of the fray.
