Coastal protection approves Rs 500 cr for beach nourishment

Visakhapatnam, Jan 19 (UNI) The Coastal Protection Development and Advisory Committee has approved the allocation of Rs 500 crore for beach nourishment and conservation, and promotion of mangroves under the 11th plan, according to its Chairman S K Agarwal.

Talking to presspersons here, he said steps have been taken for the prevention of Coastal degradation, promotion of mangrove forests, beach nourishment and the Coastal protection works.

The Centre and the state governments would initiate steps to check Coastal erosion and preserve econological balance. The Centre would provide 75 per cent of the project expenditure and the rest would be borne by the state government, he said.

Under the National Flood Management Project, an allocation of Rs 7,000 crore to Rs 8,000 crore is in the pipeline to tackle situations arising from calamities such as tsunami in future.

Coastal protection is one of the major marine ecology issues.
