Dubai: 4 Indian workers died, 5 hurt in building fire

Dubai, Jan 19: At least four Indians working as labourers were killed in a fire that broke out yesterday in a 37-storey Fortune Towers building under construction here.

Five of their compatriots were still fighting for their lives after they were being rescued, sources here said.

While three Indian workers died on way to a hospital, the fourth one succumbed to his injuries in the nearby Rashid Hospital.

One of the Indian victims has been identified as Hamza from Kerala, the Overseas Indian Affairs (OIA) Ministry told UNI in Delhi today.

According to reports quoting hospital sources, as many as 41 labourers were injured in the fire.

However, Indian mission officials are still trying to verify the exact number of those injured or being treated for various injuries, including asphyxiation.

The dead included two workers, who tried to jump from the building and died on the spot while another person trying to climb down using a crane died when its wire snapped.

There were almost 350 Indian workers at the worksite, and the victims were trapped in the top four or five floors of the building.

The fire was said to have been started from the a welding machine.
