Suspicious bag creates panic in Silchar airport

Silchar, Jan 18 (UNI) Security has been beefed up in and around the airport here following identification of a bag at the entrance of the terminus building at Silchar airport.

Cachar Superintendent of Police Satyen Gogoi said today that police received a call from the airport at Kumbhirgram, 25 kms from here, that a bag was found lying at the entrance of the terminus building at about 2300 hours.

Police sources said it was suspected that there was bomb in the unclaimed black bag. However, bomb squad of both Army and police did not finde anything after investigation.

The bomb squad found clothes, cell phone charger, tooth paste and other personal, hem the bag.

''We are trying to contact the owner of the bag,'' Udharbond police station OC Amrit Kalita said.

Soon after the bag was identified, senior police officials with the bomb squad of the Assam police, rushed to the spot.

Meanwhile, after the suspected bag was noticed, the entire airport area was cordoned off by the CISF and police. Security personnel, along with fire brigade, took positions. As the entrance of the terminus building was closed, passengers were routed through departure lounge.

Security throughout the Barak Valley, on the eve of January 26, has been beefed up after two bombs went off in Badarpur, the railway township yesterday.
