Students appeal to end blockade in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 18 (UNI) The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) today urged the ATSUM to call off the indefinite economic blockade imposed on National Highway 39 and 53.

DESAM's general secretary L C Santosh said the demands of the All Tribal Students' Union of Manipur (ATSUM) were justified and should be addressed by the government but due to the blockade the prices of essential goods were increasing.

The ATSUM had started the blockade on January five on the two highways demanding reservation for tribals to overcome earlier lapses.

However, the agreement was not carried out when appointments were made in education department recently.

Officials said security was being provided to the vehicles stranded on the Manipur-Nagaland border areas and last evening about 200 trucks had left the border areas for Imphal.
