New Delhi, Jan 18: Kendriya Sahitya Akademi was sought the participation of private publishers for taking Indian writings to various Indian and European readers in their own language.

Releasing a book titled ''The Edge of Time'' yesterday, a translation of the novel authored by Central Administrative Reforms Commission Chairman and former Karnataka Chief Minister M Veerappa Moily, Akademi Chairman Gopichand Narang said Sahitya Akademi was bringing out about 300 titles in various Indian languages in a year.

If the private publishers join hands with the Akademi, the country will be able to take genuine Indian writings to readers in their own languages and to even to Europe.

Mr Narang regretted that he was unable to read Mr Moily's original novel 'Tembere', a realistic work of fiction and anthropology. However, the good thing was that literature lovers could get a peek into the work without having a knowledge of Kannada and Tulu languages spoken in coastal Karnataka region through the translation.

Going by the long list of Mr Moily's work, he wondered how on earth, the lawyer-turned-politician found time for writing books of eminence.

Senior diplomat and legal luminary Dr L M Singhvi in his address, after going through the translated version of Mr Moily's book, said he believed that it mirrored society and the lives of Tulu people and it deserved a thorough reading for an indepth understanding of coastal culture.

Prof C N Ramachandran, the translator of the novel and Dr B A Vivek Rai Vice Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi and Mr Moily spoke about the book which depicts the experiences of exploited marginalised Dalit community named 'Pambada' in Karnataka, who are the traditional impersonators of Panjurli Bhoota, an animistic spirit. The book deals with the exploitation of the landless community who have become a pawn in the hands of those in power.

The book release function was jointly organised by Dehali Karnataka Sangha and the publishing group Rupa and Company.
