Pak Prime Minister Aziz to attend WEF at Davos

Islamabad, Jan 18: Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz willattend the annual World Economic Forum(WEF) at Davos, Switzerland,scheduled to be held from Januray 24 to 28.

The theme for WEF this year is 'Shaping the Global Agenda, TheShifting Power Equation.' Newspaper Daily Times reported that the mainsub-themes of the conference, which attracts statesmen, serving andformer heads of state and government, bankers, heads of multinationalcorporations, international civil servants and academics, range fromEconomics: New Drivers and Geopolitics: The Need for Fresh Mandates toBusiness: Leading in a Connected World and Technology and Society:Identity, Community and Networks.

The opening Session of the annual meeting will see German Chancellor Angela Merkel lay out her agenda for the year ahead.

The report also quoted Ged Davis, head of the Centre for StrategicInsight at the World Economic Forum, as saying that the idea that theworld is in transition is not new, but in 2007, the world would seemore clearly the dimensions of change in technology, society,geopolitics and economics, and the consequences for business.

As many as 24 heads of state and government are expected to attendthe conference this year, including Mahmoud Abbas, President of thePalestinian Authority; King Abdullah of Jordan; Bertie Ahern, IrelandPrime Minister ; Prince Albert II of Monaco; Ilham Aliyev, President ofAzerbaijan; Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Prime Minister of Malaysia; TonyBlair, British prime minister; Felipe Calderón-Hinojosa, President ofMexico; Micheline Calmy-Rey, President of Swizerland; Ferenc Gyurcsany,Prime Minister of Hungary; Tarja Halonen, President of Finland; EllenJohnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia; Jakaya M Kikwete, President ofTanzania; Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil and GloriaMacapagal Arroyo, President of the Philippines.
