Pathanamthitta, Jan 18 (UNI) The last 'Kalabhabhishekam' (application of sandal paste) marking the end of 'Neyyabhishekam' during the current 'Mandalam-Makara Vilakku' pilgrimage season was performed at the Lord Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala today.

Thousands of devotees thronged 'Sannidhanam' to witness the auspicious ritual, meant to cool the 'heat' of the idol generated by incessant 'Neyyabhishekam.' Tantri Kantararu Rajeevaru performed 'Kalabha Pooja' at the eastern Mandapam before filling the Golden Pot with 'Kalabham' Ten kg of Kalabham were used for the rite. Then, Melsanthi E Eswaran Namboothiri, with the permission of the Tantri, carried the 'Brahma Kalasam' in a procession into the Sanctum Sanctorum.

The Tantri poured the Kalabham on the idol just prior to 'Uchapooja.' 'Guruthy' will be performed at 'Malikappuram Devi' Temple tomorrow at 0930 hrs marking the end of 'Darshan' to devotees.

The tantric ritual will be performed after the closure of the Ayyappa Temple. After darkness today, the customary procession of 'Malikappurathamma' was held enacting the poignant romantic episode in the legendary life of Lord Ayyappa.

Marking the end of the 65-day-long 'Mandalam-Makaravilakku' pilgrimage season, the Ayyappa Temple will be closed on January 20 at 0700 hrs after exclusive 'Darshan' by the Royal Emissary 'Uthramnaal' Anilkumar Varma.
