Kolkata, Jan 18 (UNI) The West Bengal Government has sought Army assistance for construction of an alternative roadway following massive subsidence on the National Highway two in Asansol, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today said.

'' We have sought assistance from the Army for a new alignment so that vehicles can run between Durgapur in West Bengal and Dhanbad in Jharkhand bypassing the affected area in Asansol, '' he told reporters.

The Chief Minister said with the cracks appearing at several places on National Highway two, there was the need to find a realignment of roads and the Army authorities at Panagarh had been approached in this regard.

Fresh cracks developed on the highway yesterday and fissures appeared a few metres from train tracks near Asansol after the capped mouth of an old mine exploded unable to bear the presure of gas trapped inside.

The line is used by all the North India-bound trains from Kolkata.
