Chennai, Jan 18 (UNI) A day after Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi's announcement that the councillors of DMK led DPA would resign to pave way for fresh polls in 99 wards of Chennai Corporation, 56 DMK councillors submitted their papers today.

The councillors, on the directions of DMK Supremo, submitted their resignation letters to Chennai Corporation Mayor Ma Subramaniam this morning, setting the stage for the re-elections in 99 wards, listed for repolling by Justice Ibrahim Khalifulla of Madras High Court, in a split verdict on January 12.

Accepting the resignations, Mr Subramaniam, whose ward (140) also figured in the list of repoll, told newspersons that he would submit his resignation to the Corporation council and the same would be accepted by the Council after a meeting.

Two of the Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) candidates who won on DMK's 'Rising Sun' symbol also submitted their papers to the Mayor.

Councillors belonging to the Congress (25), Pattali Makkal Katchi (13), the allies of the DMK and an independent are expected to submit their papers later today.
