According to official sources, a youth Arup Das, allegedly a Trinamool worker and a member of Bhumi Raksha Committe, was killed with sharp weapons by unidentified criminals while on guard last night.

Trinamool Congress MLA Subhandu Adhikari said Nandigram was observing a 12-hour bandh in protest against the gruesome murder.

They alleged that the murder was in retaliation to the villegers driving out a group of CPI activists from the village when they were doing a closed-door meeting there.

The meeting was attended by CPI State secretary Manju Kr Majumdar, MP Probodh Panda, East Midnapore leader Chitta Das Thakur.

The body has been taken for post mortem.
