DPA councillors to resign
Chennai, Jan 17 (UNI) Ending the controversy triggered by Madras High Court's split verdict on repoll to some wards in Chennai Corporation, the ruling DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) today decided to resign from the seats and seek fresh elections in 99 wards.
Councillors of DMK, Congress, Pattali Makkal Katchi and Dalit Panthers of India (DPI), who were declared elected from the 99 wards identified in the court order, would resign their seats, and pave the way for fresh elections, DMK President and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said.
In a statement here, he said though there were opportunities to wait for the verdict of the third judge in the case and then file an appeal in the Supreme Court, it was decided to seek fresh elections without consuming further time.
He said after the October 13 elections to 155 wards of the Chennai Corporation, the State Election Commission conducted repoll in 17 booths following complaints of violence and then in 27 booths, following a court order.
