Crisis over ticket issue in Manipur Congress
Imphal, Jan 17: The Congress in Manipur has been facing a major problem over the selection of candidates for the coming Assembly elections.
The party had managed to announce tickets for 19 Assembly segments for Senapati, Ukhrul and Thoubal districts, where elections would be held on February 8 in the first phase.
Chief Minister would contest from Thoubal and Khangabok constituencies.
Nine of the 19 candidates are sitting MLAs. However, members like E Biramani of Hiyanglam and A S Arthur of Ukhrul, who were denied tickets, have resigned from the party.
For the remaining six districts, where elections would be held later, the party leaders were not able to announce tickets due to agitation by the party workers, whose candidates were denied tickets.
Meanwhile, supporters of various aspirants continued to stage demonstrations near the party office.
