An Indian national trying to smuggle currency notes held

Mumbai, Jan 17 (UNI) A Dubai-bound Indian national has been arrested by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department for allegedly attempting to smuggle out foreign and Indian currency collectively worth Rs 14,90,762 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport here.

The accused, who was slated to board a Jazeera Airlines flight to Dubai, had declared foreign currency equivalent to USD five thousand.

However, a search conducted on him by AIU sleuths led to the recovery of another undeclared six bundles of Indian and foreign currency which he had concealed in his undergarments.

After his arrest yesterday, the accused has made a confessional statement admitting to non-declaration, possession, knowledge, concealment and unauthorised carriage of the seized currency, AIU disclosed.

While the passenger has been arrested and charged under the relevant provisions of the customs act, further investigations are in progress, the AIU.
