UTP escapes from Itanagar police lock-up

Itanagar, Jan 16 (UNI) Gungte Tagung, an under-trial prisoner (UTP), escaped for the second time from the police station lock-up here last night.

Tagung, arrested from Dimapur on August 2005, was being tried in the December 9, 2004 Itanagar Public Works Department dacoity case.

He had managed to escape from the same lock-up in February last year and was later arrested after a month from here.

Search operation in and around the capital complex was launched immediately in the neighbouring states of Asom and Nagaland to apprehend the fugitive, police said.

Director General of Police Amod K Kanth, who along with IGP A K Sinha and DIGP M K Lal inspected the lock-up this afternoon, said an urgent inquiry and exemplary action were being taken against erring police officers.
