UTP escape from Itanagar police lock-up
Itanagar, Jan 16 (UNI) In a daring lock-up-break for the second time, Gungte Tagung, an under trial prisoner (UTP), escaped from the police station lock-up here on January 15 night after breaking open the iron grills of the ventilator.
Tagung, arrested from Dimapur on August 2005, was being tried in the December 9, 2004, Itanagar Public Works Department dacoity case.
He had managed to escape from the same lock-up in February last year and later arrested from here after a month.
Search operation in and around the capital complex was launched immediately in the neighbouring states of Asom and Nagaland to apprehend the fugitive, police informed.
Interestingly, the construction of the state jail was over and DIG (Prison) was appointed, but it was yet to be made functional.
Director General of Police Amod K Kanth, who along with IGP A K Sinha and DIGP M K Lal, while inspecting the lock-up this afternoon, told that an urgent inquiry and exemplary action is being initiated against the erring police officers.
