Srinagar, Jan 16 (UNI) Security forces today averted a major tragedy when they detected two powerful Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by militants in the high security cantonment area.

Panic gripped the area when a security force Road Opening Party (ROP) noticed a box on the roadside near G B Panth hospital in the area, just outside the headquarters of 15 corps, on the Srinagar- Jammu national highway.

Traffic on the road was suspended. Vehicles to south Kashmir were diverted through Nowgam bypass.

They said during the search of nearby area, another IED planted in the water was detected near a bank.

Later, bomb disposal squad of the Jammu and Kashmir police was summoned and both the IEDs were defused.

It was not, however, clear how the militants managed to plant the IED in the high security area, guarded by security forces round the clock.

Meanwhile, security forces have intensified random search operations in the city, ahead of Republic Day.

Almost all the vehicles coming from the outskirts and districts were being properly searched by the security forces before being allowed to enter the city.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police personnel, deployed in the civil lines were conducting random operations frisking pedestrians, shopkeepers, drivers and passengers at different places.

Additional security and police personnel have been deployed to foil any militant attempt to cause blasts ahead of Republic Day functions in the Kashmir valley.

About 15 persons, including five CRPF personnel, were injured in three grenade blasts on Saturday in the city.
