Robbers murder watchman, flee with valuables worth Rs 3 lakh

Surat, Jan 15: Three robbers attacked a posh bungalow here early this morning and looted valuables worth rupees three lakh, after murdering the watchman.

Police said that an elderly couple are the sole residents of the River Residents bungalow at Athwa Lines here.

Ashok Sawani, a diamond merchant, had just returned from his morning walk when his house was attacked by the robbers.

The robbers first attacked the watchman and slit his throat with sharp weapons. The watchman was killed on the spot, police said.

The three then forcibly enetered the house and, while threatening the elderly couple with weapons, fled with jewellery and cash, police said.

The dazed couple could raise an alarm only after the dacoits had fled.

The Sawani couple were living alone in the bungalow and their children are staying abroad, sources said.

City police commissioner R M S Brar has visited the spot and investigations are underway.
