Railways' revenue on the upswing
New Delhi, Jan 16 (UNI) The Railways generated Rs 30241.29 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during April-December last year as compared to Rs 25886.96 crore during the corresponding period a year earlier, registering an increase of 16.91 per cent.
During the period, the Railways carried 527.95 million tonnes of freight traffic as compared to 481.09 million tonnes carried during April-December 2005, an increase of 9.74 per cent.
The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 346241 million during April- December 2005 to 317256 million during the corresponding period last year, up 9.89 per cent.
The earnings from freight traffic during December last year were Rs 3738.84 crore as compared to Rs 3251.41 crore during the corresponding period a year earlier, showing an increase of 14.99 per cent.
The Railways carried 63.56 million tonnes (MTs) of freight traffic during the month as compared to 59.14 million tonnes of freight traffic during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 7.47 per cent.
The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 41377 million during the month of December 2005 to 39827 million during December 2006, an increase of 3.89 per cent.
Of the total earnings during December last year, Rs 1442.52 crore came from transportation of coal, followed by Rs 308.71 crore (cement), Rs 275.09 crore (foodgrains), Rs 254.08 crore (iron ore for exports), and Rs 250.15 crore (petroleum oil and lubricant).
In addition, it earned Rs 238.98 crore from transportation of fertilisers, Rs 196.17 crore (iron and steel for steel plants), Rs 182.03 crore (raw material for steel plants) and Rs 591.11 crore (other goods).
